Parents’ shock as smiling baby girl is born with two front teeth

A newborn baby girl shocked her parents with her first smile minutes after she was born – because she had two fully formed front teeth.
Normally, the first teeth don’t come through until the infant is aged between six months and one year.
But little Summer Whelan was born with two pearly white incisors in her lower gums.

As excuses go, it’s up there with ‘leaves on the line’ and ‘the dog ate my homework’.
Half a million self-employed workers have been left in limbo – with some forced to go overdrawn – after the taxman failed to order enough paper.
Around four million statements were supposed to have been sent out to those who fill in self-assessment tax returns.

Million drivers face losing licence under EU diabetes diktat

Up to one million people with diabetes could lose their driving licences because of harsh new European rules classifying them as unfit to drive.
Experts claim the ‘unnecessarily strict’ changes will affect hundreds of thousands who have been driving for decades without problems.
They say the rules amount to a blanket ban on diabetics taking insulin who occasionally have ‘hypos’ – episodes of hypoglycaemia, or low blood sugar, which may cause blackouts if not countered with a sugary snack.

‘Maggie Goes On A Diet’ book for girls as young as SIX branded ‘irresponsible’

A controversial children’s book tells how a girl ‘transforms’ her life and becomes a school hero by losing weight.
The work, called Maggie Goes on a Diet, is written in verse and aimed at those as young as six.
Last night it was condemned by parents and experts for sending a dangerous message to vulnerable youngsters and encouraging eating disorders.

Pregnant women hit by return of rickets because they’re not getting enough sun

Rickets had virtually been eliminated after the Secodn World War, but could return to pregnant women who do not get enough vitamin DVitamin D levels in pregnant women should be checked to protect their babies from rickets, the disease which was the scourge of Victorian Britain.
Experts claim rickets is returning because many are not getting enough of the sunshine vitamin.
Pregnant women should be screened for deficiency as it can lead to seizures, heart failure and rickets in their children, says an article in the Journal of Medical Screening.

Hate crime unit probes beating of security guard

Vancouver police are seeking a suspect in the violent assault and robbery of a security guard and are investigating the incident as a possible hate crime.
Police released surveillance images of a suspect in the incident, which took place about 4:30 a.m. PT Aug. 4 at a residential tower in the 500 block of Pacific Street, Const. Jana McGuiness said in a release Friday.
The Hate Crimes Unit has also been asked to look into alleged comments overheard during the assault and robbery, McGuinness said.

West Coast fish to be tested for Fukushima radiation

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency plans to start testing fish off the coast of British Columbia for the presence of radiation stemming from the Fukushima nuclear disaster in Japan earlier this year.
The agency has not yet released any specific details on the testing program, but did say it expects the test results to be well below Health Canada’s actionable levels for radiation.

Lord Coe has spoken of his ‘shock’ at finding out he is descended from a philandering Jamaican slave owner who fathered an illegitimate child with one of his workers.
The 2012 Olympics chief made the shocking discovery as he took part in the BBC television programme Who Do You Think You Are.
