Manager of Jamie Oliver restaurant jailed

The former manager of TV celebrity cook Jamie Oliver’s Melbourne restaurant has been sentenced to five-and-a-half years over a multi-million-dollar fire.
Kevan Stralow, 35, was found guilty in April of burning down the offices of the Fifteen Restaurant in Flinders Lane in June 2008.
He was also convicted of stealing more than $20,000 in takings.
The court heard that during a two-month crime spree, it was Stralow’s job to regularly bank the takings of the restaurant, established by Oliver to help disadvantaged youths.
He began banking the takings late, gambling with the money – mostly through poker machines – and replacing it later.

1920s murder mystery series coming to ABC

Essie Davis is set to star in a new ABC series, Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries, based on the best-selling Kerry Greenwood novels.
The series will start production in Melbourne next month and air on ABC1 next year.
It also stars Nathan Page (Underbelly, All Saints), Miriam Margoyles (Babe, Harry Potter) and Hugo Johnstone-Burt (Cloudstreet) and is produced by Deb Cox and Fiona Eagger.
Davis, who is currently starring in Cloudstreet, will play sleuth Phryne Fisher, who sashays through the back lanes and jazz clubs of late 1920s Melbourne, fighting injustice with her pearl-handled pistol and her dagger sharp wit.

Man feared dead in mining port accident

Police divers have joined the search for a man feared dead after an incident at a Rio Tinto wharf in Western Australia’s north-west.
Police say the man was reported missing after the scaffolding he was dismantling collapsed into the harbour on East Intercourse Island in Dampier.
Witnesses say they saw the man’s hardhat floating in the water and heard the sound of falling scaffolding, but did not see him fall.
Police believe the man is not from Western Australia but will not release further details about his identity until the recovery operation is complete and relatives have been notified.

Noam Chomsky wins Sydney Peace Prize

The winner of this year’s Sydney Peace Prize says he believes Australian and other allied soldiers in Afghanistan are making the world more dangerous.
The Peace Foundation has awarded the $50,000 prize to US linguist and philosopher Noam Chomsky for what it describes as his unfailing moral courage and critical analysis of democracy and power.
Previous winners of the prize include South Africa’s Archbishop Desmond Tutu, journalist John Pilger, former UN weapons inspector Hans Blix, Palestinian activist Hanan Ashrawi, and Indigenous human rights activist Patrick Dodson.

Christian leader singled out for homophobia award

Gay and lesbian advocates have named the head of the Australian Christian Lobby as having the most outrageous and ignorant attitudes towards gay issues.
The GLORIA awards is an event organised by gay and lesbian advocates in Sydney, aimed at exposing homophobic comments in the Australian media.
Australian Christian Lobby managing director Jim Wallace was awarded the Golden GLORIA for his Anzac Day tweet that said Australia’s servicemen and women had not fought for gay marriage or Islam.

Dolly Parton to tour Australia

Country music superstar Dolly Parton will return to Australia for the first time in nearly 30 years for a tour this November.
She will begin in Perth on November 8 before heading to Adelaide, Sydney, the Hunter Valley, Melbourne and Brisbane with music from her forthcoming album Better Day.
The 65-year-old queen of country music’s career spans more than four decades, with 25 number-one singles and 41 top-10 country albums.

Indian yoga guru hungry for justice

16yo girl dies in bike collision

A 16-year-old girl has died after a bike crash in Western Australia.
Police say the teenager was catapulted off a trail bike after colliding with a quad bike on a dirt track at Ledge Point, 120 kilometres north of Perth.
The girl was flown to hospital but died from injuries sustained in the crash.
Cowell accused of fixing talent show winner

Pop mogul Simon Cowell has called in police over internet allegations that his firm groomed a contestant on Britain’s Got Talent and that the popular TV show is therefore fixed, police said.
Cowell’s lawyers made the complaint to officers after an anonymous blogger alleged that Ronan Parke, the 12-year-old favourite to win Saturday’s final, had been secretly advised by his company for two years.
The blogger claimed Ronan Parke already has a management deal with Cowell’s company Syco and had received guidance on his hairstyle, clothing and mannerisms.
