Manager of Jamie Oliver restaurant jailed

Kevan Stralow, 35, was found guilty in April of burning down the offices of the Fifteen Restaurant in Flinders Lane in June 2008.
He was also convicted of stealing more than $20,000 in takings.
The court heard that during a two-month crime spree, it was Stralow’s job to regularly bank the takings of the restaurant, established by Oliver to help disadvantaged youths.
He began banking the takings late, gambling with the money – mostly through poker machines – and replacing it later.

Man feared dead in mining port accident

Police say the man was reported missing after the scaffolding he was dismantling collapsed into the harbour on East Intercourse Island in Dampier.
Witnesses say they saw the man’s hardhat floating in the water and heard the sound of falling scaffolding, but did not see him fall.
Police believe the man is not from Western Australia but will not release further details about his identity until the recovery operation is complete and relatives have been notified.

Noam Chomsky wins Sydney Peace Prize

The Peace Foundation has awarded the $50,000 prize to US linguist and philosopher Noam Chomsky for what it describes as his unfailing moral courage and critical analysis of democracy and power.

The GLORIA awards is an event organised by gay and lesbian advocates in Sydney, aimed at exposing homophobic comments in the Australian media.

16yo girl dies in bike collision

Police say the teenager was catapulted off a trail bike after colliding with a quad bike on a dirt track at Ledge Point, 120 kilometres north of Perth.
