Writer Murong Xuecun prepared these remarks on censorship as an acceptance speech for a Chinese literary prize. But, as he approached the platform, he was abruptly barred from speaking. He delivered this version of the talk at Hong Kong’s Foreign Correspondents Club on February 22, 2011.
MURONG XUECUN:
If I am not mistaken, the People’s Literature magazine “special action award” was not bestowed for my literary achievement, but for my courage. This is an unusual honour for me as a writer. It’s a bit like praising a football player for being a good street fighter. I feel embarrassed because I am More >

Libya’s leader Muammar Gaddafi’s rule seemed to hang by a thread on Monday as the Middle East’s wave of revolts threw North Africa’s biggest oil power into turmoil, threatening not just to end Gaddafi’s 41 years in power, but to rock the petroleum world too. With up to 300 people estimated to have been killed during a week of clashes between protesters and security forces, the price of oil More >

Demonstrators at an event to support the revolution in Egypt, Paris, Feb. 6th, 2011.
As the youth of Algeria, Libya and other Middle Eastern countries take to the streets to challenge autocratic regimes, hoping to reprise Tunisia’s success in dispatching President Zine el Abidine Ben Ali, their cousins in Europe are avidly following their progress. And young Europeans with roots in North Africa warn that the protest movements are unlikely to produce similar results in all Arab countries — or to necessarily produce any results at all. Still, millions of Arab expatriates around the world are watching anxiously. “This isn’t More >

PC World – SOPA and PIPA may have been put on hold — thanks to possibly the most contentious uproar seen on Capitol Hill and in the tech world ever — but other legislation was introduced this week to combat online piracy.
Rep. Darrell Issa (R-California) introduced H.R. 3782, the Online Protection and Enforcement of Digital Trade Act in the U.S. House of Representatives on Wednesday, the same day as an Internet protest when a number of high-profile websites such as Wikipedia went dark. Issa says the new bill delivers stronger intellectual property rights for American artists and innovators while protecting More >

Computerworld – Apple let a fake app slip through its approval process for the iOS App Store, the makers of the popular Camera+ program said over the weekend.
Security researchers who noted the slip-up did not know whether the bogus app contained malware because they had been unable to grab a copy before Apple yanked it from the App Store.
On Saturday, the iPhoneography blog announced that a new App Store entry was fake.
The App Store listing touted Camera+ version 4.0, and listed the price at $0.99.
Although the real Camera+ — created by Tap Tap Tap — is sold for the More >

IDG News Service – Los Angeles-based Web hosting firm DreamHost reset the FTP and shell access passwords for all of its customers on Friday after detecting unauthorized activity within one of its databases.
“One of DreamHost’s database servers was illegally accessed using an exploit that was not previously known or prevented by our layered security systems in place,” said DreamHost’s CEO, Simon Anderson, in a blog post on Saturday.
Even though it couldn’t be blocked, the unauthorized access was detected by one of the company’s intrusion detection systems (IDS), allowing its security team to react quickly and take the necessary mitigation steps.
